Here are some basic things that you as a PC owner can do to prevent attacks on your computer data and privacy.
Anti Virus/Anti Spyware-There are many great programs out there to help protect your computer from malicious content. We can provide you the best programs at the best possible price. We recommend using McAfee.
Passwords-Use passwords that are a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols (!@#$) wherever possible. Use different passwords for different items. Do not use passwords that will be easily deciphered (ie. last name). Do not use your username in your password.
Firewall-Make sure your firewall is running at all times, unless you need to turn it off in order to run a specific program. Windows XP includes a firewall program, or you can purchase one of many independent firewall programs available today.
How to activate Windows Firewall:
Start -> Control panel -> Network connections
Right click Local Area Connection and choose Properties
Click Settings on the Advanced tab
On General tab choose On (recommended), Click OK
Windows Update-Programmers cannot fix every bug, hole, or mistake before a program comes out. Because of this, Microsoft offers free updates (very often for the purpose of protecting you from new attacks). Microsoft programmers are constantly updating and improving Windows, and you should take advantage of this. One way to insure you are getting the latest updates is to switch automatic updates on.
How to turn automatic updates for Windows on (Windows XP):
Start -> Control panel -> System
Choose Automatic Updates tab
Mark Automatic (recommended)
Choose one of the options below up to your needs
Click OK
Email-Do not open any attachments that look suspicious, are from someone you do not know, or unless you are absolutely sure it is not a threat. Many viruses disguise themselves as an attachment from a friend, so be sure before you download that attachment. Do not open any .exe attachments in an email. Click here to read more.
